HBO Max posted the Lanterns midseason trailer on September 17, and it confirms what episode 5 only implied: Hal Jordan is dead. The two-minute cut sets up the show’s final three episodes, running through the October 4 finale on HBO Max, as a straight murder mystery that puts John Stewart between Sinestro and Guy Gardner.

Hal Jordan Is Dead, and John Stewart Found the Body

The trailer never shows the moment itself, but it doesn’t leave much room to doubt it either. Per SuperHeroHype, the cut includes the line “I never thought he’d actually die,” and Gizmodo reports Hal is found shot in the head, with the season’s last three episodes built around a single question: who killed Hal Jordan? Both outlets note the show has already spent five episodes putting Hal and John at odds, which is exactly the kind of history a murder mystery needs a long suspect list from.
Our own review of episode 5, “Lights Out” already flagged Hal as the season’s real threat going into the back half, so the trailer isn’t a cold open on this idea. It’s confirmation.
The Sheriff’s Department Sign Gives Away Where This Is Headed

One shot lingers on a brick building with a lit sign over the door: “Sheridan County Sheriffs Department.” Neither trailer breakdown we checked mentions it by name, but it lines up exactly with what Gizmodo reports about the setting — Hal staying behind in Rushville, Nebraska after John took his ring. Rushville is the real-world county seat of Sheridan County, Nebraska, so the show’s own signage is quietly confirming its setting rather than inventing a fictional town name.
Sinestro and Guy Gardner Pull John Stewart in Opposite Directions

A bald, shadowed figure sits alone in a dim cell for a couple of cuts, matching Ulrich Thomsen’s build closely enough to read as Sinestro rather than a new face. Gizmodo describes Sinestro and Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion) as “the devil and angel on Stewart’s broad shoulders” for this stretch of the season.
SuperHeroHype reports a scene where John calls in a favor from Gardner — “You owe me” — only for Gardner to refuse, making his dislike of Hal plain. Neither outlet nails down exactly what Sinestro wants out of the murder investigation, and the trailer doesn’t spell it out either.
The Trailer Rewrites the Green Lantern Oath

In the last ten seconds, the trailer drops the footage entirely and cuts to four black cards, one line at a time: “In blackest night,” “no evil,” “shall escape,” “their sight.” It’s the first time the show has quoted the Green Lantern oath on screen at all — and it changes the ending.
The actual oath ends “no evil shall escape my sight,” not “their sight.” Swapping in “their” turns a personal vow into something closer to a verdict passed on someone else. Given the season is built around figuring out who killed Hal, that one-word change reads like a deliberate hint about whose judgment it’s actually building toward.
That’s a lot to hang on the back half of a show that was already performing well before any of this aired: HBO reported Lanterns hit a series-high 10 million viewers ahead of episode 4 on September 6, 2026.
What’s New Here
Three things this trailer does that no earlier Lanterns marketing has: it confirms a lead character’s death on screen instead of teasing it, it gives Sinestro his first real screen time of the season rather than a cameo, and it’s the first time the show has directly quoted Green Lantern comics mythology — and changed it — instead of keeping the ring powers grounded and unspoken the way the first five episodes did.
What the Trailer Doesn’t Show
It doesn’t show who pulled the trigger, or even confirm the killer is someone we’ve already met. SuperHeroHype reports a line from Hal himself — “There’s more than one killer at this table” — which muddies the suspect list rather than narrowing it.
The trailer also doesn’t explain what Sinestro is doing in a cell, doesn’t confirm a season 2, and the blond figure in Lantern-style armor on HBO Max’s own trailer thumbnail doesn’t turn up in a recognizable shot anywhere in the two-minute cut. Whoever that is stays a thumbnail-only tease for now.
