Get ready, bub. The X-Men are back, and it looks like things are about to get seriously heavy. The first trailer for X-Men ’97 Season 2 just dropped at New York Comic-Con, and it’s packed with everything fans have been hoping for: new mutants, old enemies, and a story that promises to be even darker and more ambitious than the show’s celebrated first season. With a Summer 2026 release window confirmed for Disney+, the countdown has officially begun.
While the trailer hasn’t been released to the public yet, reports from the convention floor paint a thrilling picture of what’s to come. The biggest news? A whopping ten new mutants are joining the fray, including some fan-favorites who are finally getting their animated due. But it’s not all new faces and friendly reunions. The season’s big bad is none other than the immortal Apocalypse, and if that wasn’t enough, it seems a whole host of Wolverine’s most personal enemies are crawling out of the woodwork. When Does X-Men ’97 Season 2 Release?
While Marvel hasn’t given us a specific day just yet, they have confirmed that X-Men ’97 Season 2 will premiere in the summer of 2026. The good news is that production on the season is already complete, which means we’re just waiting on the official announcement. And for those of you already looking ahead, you’ll be happy to know that X-Men ’97 Season 3 has already been renewed, so there’s plenty more of our favorite mutants on the way.
Every New Character Confirmed for X-Men ’97 Season 2
The NYCC trailer revealed a massive expansion of the show’s mutant roster. Here are the ten new characters you can expect to see when the show returns:
- Colossus: The organic steel-skinned powerhouse is back! After a couple of appearances in the original series, Piotr Rasputin is set to play a bigger role.
- Polaris: In a bit of perfect casting, ’90s icon Neve Campbell will voice Magneto’s daughter, Lorna Dane. This marks her first appearance in the animated universe.
- Kid Omega: The rebellious and incredibly powerful Quentin Quire, an Omega-level mutant, is making his animated debut.
- Hollow: With her diamond-hard, crimson skin and ability to resist telepathy, Hollow is sure to be a wild card.
- Psylocke: The psychic ninja, Betsy Braddock, is returning after a few appearances in the original show, ready to slice and dice with her psychic blades.
- Archangel: Warren Worthington III is back, and it looks like he’s still grappling with his transformation into one of Apocalypse’s Horsemen.
- Multiple Man: Jamie Madrox, the man who can create an army of himself, is returning to the fold.
- Havok: Cyclops’s brother, Alex Summers, is back, and you can bet there will be some family drama.
- Strong Guy: The aptly named Guido Carosella is bringing his super-strength back to the X-Factor team.
- Wolfsbane: The Scottish mutant who can transform into a wolf-like creature is rejoining her X-Factor teammates.
Polaris Joins the Fight (Neve Campbell)
One of the most exciting reveals is the casting of Neve Campbell as Polaris. Former showrunner Beau DeMayo confirmed the news, stating he wanted a ’90s icon to voice the powerful mutant. As Magneto’s daughter, Polaris shares her father’s control over magnetism, and her introduction is sure to shake things up, especially with Magneto’s current path. Her struggle with bipolar disorder in the comics could also add a new layer of depth to the series.
Wolverine’s Rogues’ Gallery Returns
If you thought Season 1 was a little light on Wolverine-centric stories, Season 2 is here to correct that. The trailer reportedly features a heavy presence from some of Logan’s most iconic villains, including:
- Sabertooth: Their brutal history was only hinted at in the original series, but it looks like we’re finally going to see their rivalry explored in full.
- Omega Red: The Soviet super-soldier is back, and he’s still got a major grudge against Wolverine.
- Lady Deathstrike: After being saved by the X-Men in the original series, she seemed to have a change of heart. But with her adamantium-laced skeleton and thirst for revenge, you can never be too sure.
Why X-Men ’97 Season 2 Will Be Darker Than Season 1
If you thought the destruction of Genosha was dark, you might want to brace yourself. Ross Marquand, the voice of Professor X, has gone on record saying that Season 2 is “very, very dark” and that “a lot of people die.” In an interview with Collider, he expressed his surprise that Disney greenlit such a dark turn for the series. This, combined with the introduction of a villain like Apocalypse, suggests that the X-Men are in for their toughest fight yet.
What We Know About the Season 2 Plot
Season 2 is set to pick up right where the first season’s epic cliffhanger left off. The X-Men are scattered across time, with Cyclops and Jean Grey in the distant future (3,000 BC) with a teenage Cable and Mother Askani, while other members of the team are trapped in ancient Egypt. Back in the present, Forge is the last X-Man standing, and Cable, Sunspot, and Jubilee are missing.
The main thrust of the season will be the X-Men’s struggle to reunite and find their way back home, all while battling Apocalypse across different eras. The trailer showed Bishop returning to bring some of the team back to their time, but it’s clear that this will be a season-long struggle.

What Happened to Gambit?
The tragic death of Gambit in the attack on Genosha was one of the most shocking moments of Season 1. However, a post-credit scene showing Apocalypse picking up one of Gambit’s playing cards has led to widespread speculation that the Ragin’ Cajun could return as one of Apocalypse’s Horsemen, specifically Death. When asked about this, supervising producer Jake Castorena was cryptic, simply saying, “Everything is meticulously planned.” It seems we’ll have to wait and see what fate has in store for Remy LeBeau.
Voice Cast and Returning Characters
One of the great joys of X-Men ’97 is the return of so many of the original voice actors. Season 2 will continue this tradition, with Cal Dodd (Wolverine), Lenore Zann (Rogue), George Buza (Beast), and many others reprising their iconic roles. They’ll be joined by new additions like Neve Campbell and Adetokumboh M’Cormack as the voice of Apocalypse.
How Season 2 Connects to the Original Animated Series
X-Men ’97 has done a masterful job of continuing the story of the original animated series while also updating it for a modern audience. Season 2 looks to continue this trend, bringing back characters and plotlines that were introduced in the ’90s show and giving them new depth and complexity. The return of Wolverine’s classic villains, the exploration of his and Sabertooth’s shared history, and the culmination of the Apocalypse saga are all things that fans of the original series have been waiting to see.
With its ambitious time-travel plot, a roster of new and returning characters, and a promise of a darker, more mature story, X-Men ’97 Season 2 is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated animated series in years. Get ready for a wild ride, X-Fans.
