Six short episodes, no dragons, and the cheapest way into Westeros

Three hours gets you the whole season. Six episodes at 30 to 42 minutes is roughly a third of what House of the Dragon asks for, and the story is scaled to match: Ira Parker and George R. R. Martin adapted The Hedge Knight, the first of the Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas, and it is about a penniless knight trying to enter a tournament, not a war of succession. That is the pitch. If every previous attempt to get you into this franchise failed on the size of the map, this one has almost no map.

It sits about a century back from Game of Thrones, which in practice means houses you recognize and not one character you have followed before. Peter Claffey’s Dunk and Dexter Sol Ansell’s Egg are new faces carrying the whole thing, and the Targaryens around them – Bertie Carvel’s Baelor, Sam Spruell’s Maekar, Finn Bennett’s Aerion – are introduced as strangers rather than as payoffs. We covered that casting when it was announced in our look at HBO’s choice of leads.

The reception backs the pitch up. It scored 75 on Metacritic from 38 critics, took nine Emmy nominations for its first season including Outstanding Drama Series, won the Dragon Award for best science-fiction or fantasy television series, and averaged close to 13 million viewers an episode. HBO had already renewed it in November 2025, before a single episode aired; season 2 adapts the second novella, The Sworn Sword, started shooting in December 2025, and adds Lucy Boynton, Babou Ceesay and Peter Mullan for an expected 2027 release. So this is a three-hour commitment to a show that is definitely continuing – which is more than can be said for the neighboring series. Our House of the Dragon guide covers the larger show, and its long wait for season 3 explains why this one arrived first.
