Three roads to immortality, and the first Alien story told on Earth
The premise is laid out in the opening minutes of the first episode, and everything after it follows from there. Humanity is chasing immortality three ways: cyborgs, who are people with machine parts; synthetics, who are artificial from the start; and hybrids, synthetic bodies carrying a transferred human consciousness. Noah Hawley’s series is about which of those wins, and the crashed research vessel is the accelerant rather than the subject. Read the episode list above as a corporate story with a monster in it, not the other way round.
That is also what makes it the first Alien you can start cold. Nothing here requires the films: the company driving the plot is Prodigy, a rival Weyland-Yutani spends the season trying to take its cargo back from, and Sydney Chandler’s Wendy – the first hybrid, leading a group of prototypes the company named after Peter Pan’s Lost Boys – has no counterpart in any earlier story. Alex Lawther plays her human brother on the other side of the company, and Timothy Olyphant plays the synthetic who trains them. Episodes run anywhere from 45 to 64 minutes, so the eight of them add up to somewhere between six and eight and a half hours.
It is also the first Alien story told at television length, and it uses it. The franchise’s films have to introduce a crew, strand them and finish inside two hours; a season can spend an entire episode on what a company does with something it should not have. FX renewed it in November 2025 with Noah Hawley returning, and no premiere date has been set, so the wait is real. In the meantime, Ridley Scott’s plans for the next film are the other half of where this franchise is going, and Marvel’s Alien vs. Captain America crossover is the strangest place the xenomorph has turned up lately.
