Thirteen seasons, twelve places to start

The question this show actually poses is not what order to watch it in. It is which season to start with. American Horror Story is an anthology. Each season is a closed story with its own setting, its own characters and its own ending, and the same actors come back as somebody else entirely: Sarah Paulson has played a medium, a journalist, a witch and a pair of conjoined twins, and those characters mostly have nothing to do with one another. You can open season 5 having seen nothing and lose very little. That is unusual enough that the ordinary advice, start at the start, is the wrong advice here. Season 1 is a good season, not necessarily the one that will keep you watching.

So, four honest entry points. Murder House (season 1) is twelve episodes and shows you what the format is for. Asylum (season 2) is the season most often ranked the best and the most punishing, set in a Massachusetts institution in 1964. Coven (season 3) is the most fun, and the easiest to hand to somebody who is not sure they like horror. 1984 (season 9) is nine episodes of slasher pastiche and about as small a commitment as the show offers. The one season not to start with is Apocalypse (season 8): it is a direct sequel to seasons 1 and 3, it gives away the endings of both, and it is the only place the anthology rule breaks.

The connective tissue that does exist is thinner than its reputation. Hotel opens one episode in the house from season 1; Lana Winters from Asylum turns up with a television interview in the last episode of Roanoke; Pepper appears in both Asylum and Freak Show; and Apocalypse folds seasons 1 and 3 into one story. The rest is a shared universe in the loosest sense. The series record has the full production history. Season 13 premieres on FX on Thursday, September 24, 2026, with three half-hour episodes, and runs to October 29. It needs no homework either: our week-by-week schedule for season 13 has every FX and Hulu date, and our trailer breakdown covers what FX has shown so far.
