A spin-off that needs no homework, and a second season that leaves England
You do not need to have seen the film first. Guy Ritchie’s 2019 The Gentlemen and this series share a world and a sense of humour but not a cast or a single character. Theo James’s Eddie Horniman inherits a dukedom in the first episode and finds out, almost immediately, what his father had been letting a criminal family grow under the estate. Everything the show needs you to know, it tells you there. Sixteen episodes over two seasons, and both seasons were released complete on Netflix rather than weekly.

Season 2 is a bigger show than season 1, and a slightly different one. The first eight episodes stay close to home: one estate, one criminal family, and an aristocrat working out how deep in he already is. The second eight take the business to Italy with a mafia fixer, bring a vote on cannabis legalisation into the House of Lords, and trade the question of whether Eddie can get out for the question of what he wants now that he is staying in. That second question is harder, and it is the better one.

Two practical notes. Netflix renewed the series for a third season in August 2026, before season 2 had gone out, so the second finale is not a series finale; the production record has the renewal. And the episodes are uneven in length, from 41 minutes to 67, so season 1 runs closer to seven hours than six. For what else arrived on Netflix around the same week, our September 2026 Netflix picks covers the rest of the slate, and if you want another crime series built on people talking their way out of trouble, our Penguin guide is the closest thing on our shelf.
