The JSA movie that outgrew its own villain
Black Adam was sold as an origin story and plays more like a team-up pilot. Dwayne Johnson’s Teth-Adam, freed from five thousand years of imprisonment, is less a protagonist than a force the rest of the movie has to react to: a nation that wants its own anti-colonial champion back, and a Justice Society — Hawkman, Doctor Fate, Atom Smasher and Cyclone — sent in by Amanda Waller to bring him in line. The film is at its best in the scenes between Adam and Pierce Brosnan’s Doctor Fate, the one member of the team who treats him as someone worth understanding rather than a problem to contain.
The film exists at an odd angle to DC history now. It was built as the start of a bigger Black Adam arc, with a sequel reportedly in early development before James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios in 2022 and rebooted the shared universe around their own Chapter One slate. Nothing about Black Adam carries forward into the new DCU, which makes it the rare blockbuster that functions entirely as a one-off: no continuity homework before it, none required after.
