The multiverse show that is actually about one marriage

Dark Matter’s premise sounds like a thriller and plays like a character study. Jason Dessen gets abducted into a version of his own life where he made the ambitious choice instead of the stable one, and the show’s real question is not whether he gets home, it is whether the version of him who stayed home was ever as content as he looked. Joel Edgerton plays at least two versions of the same man across the season and makes them legibly different people without ever resorting to a costume change or a accent. Jennifer Connelly’s Daniela is doing just as much work on the other side of the mystery, noticing that the husband who came home is not quite the one who left.

Season 1 is a self-contained mystery box, and it closes most of its own questions by the finale. Season 2, airing weekly through October 30, 2026, picks up with the Dessens trying to build a quiet life in a world that is not originally theirs, which turns out to be its own kind of impossible once the box itself starts getting used by people they cannot control. It is a slower, more unsettled season than the first, more interested in the cost of the choice Jason already made than in finding a new one.

Based on Blake Crouch’s novel of the same name, with Crouch himself running the writers’ room. The production record has the full episode history. If you want another high-concept sci-fi show that trusts its actors to carry an identity question instead of an effects budget, our Severance guide is the closest thing on our shelf, and for a bigger-scale multiverse-adjacent swing our Foundation guide covers the other end of that spectrum.
