A kaiju show about the guy who cleans up after the heroes

The hook is right there in the premise: Kafka Hibino is not a chosen one. He is thirty-two, he missed his shot at the Defense Force years ago, and his job is hauling away the corpses of the monsters other people kill. When he gains the power to become one of the kaiju he used to clean up after, the show does not treat it as a gift. It treats it as a secret he has to keep from the only people who could actually use someone with his power, because being discovered means being hunted. That tension, between wanting to belong to the Defense Force and needing to hide the one thing that would make him useful to it, carries the first season more than the kaiju fights do.

Season 2 widens the cast rather than escalating the stakes for their own sake. Kikoru Shinomiya, who spends season 1 doubting Kafka, gets her own arc opposite the Defense Force’s strongest fighter; Reno gets a storyline built around a weapon that is actively hurting him to use. If you came for giant monsters, they are here and they are well animated, but what makes the show worth a recommendation over most of this season’s action anime is that it keeps remembering Kafka is a guy in his thirties who is bad at talking about his feelings, surrounded by people half his age who outrank him.

Both seasons are out now, 23 episodes total, with no announced date yet for season 3. The production record has the full episode and staff history. If the “ordinary person becomes the thing that fights monsters” structure is what hooked you, our Attack on Titan guide is the other major anime built on that same idea, from a very different angle. Everything else we track by air date is in our watch guides.
