Man of Steel Guide: Runtime, Cast and Where to Stream

The first film of a continuity that no longer exists

Man of Steel is no longer the start of anything, and that is the most important thing about it in 2026. When it opened in 2013 it was the foundation of the DC Extended Universe – the film Batman v Superman, Justice League and everything after it were built on. That continuity ended in 2023. James Gunn’s 2025 Superman started a separate one and carries nothing over, not the casting and not the events. So a reader arriving from the new film looking for the previous chapter is not going to find it here. They are going to find a different Superman.

Taken on its own terms it is a specific and divisive film, and worth being honest about which. Zack Snyder directed from a David S. Goyer screenplay, with a story Goyer wrote with Christopher Nolan, and Hans Zimmer replaced John Williams’s theme with one almost nobody can hum. It spends its first hour on Clark Kent as a drifter rather than a reporter, keeps the cape off for long stretches, and ends on a choice that fans have argued about for more than a decade. Henry Cavill is very good in it. Whether the film around him is the Superman you want is the actual question, and it is a question the 2025 reboot answers differently on purpose.

Nothing is required before it – it is an origin story and starts at the beginning, which is the one practical advantage it still has over every later DCEU film. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is the direct continuation if you want that thread, and it is where the arguments about this film’s ending get answered, for better or worse.
