Hugh Jackman’s last Wolverine film needed almost none of the other eight
Logan is deliberately built to work without the rest of the X-Men franchise. It is set in 2029, years after anything else in the original Fox continuity, with most mutants gone and Logan himself dying slowly from adamantium poisoning while caring for an ailing Charles Xavier in hiding. James Mangold wrote it to stand alone rather than pay off earlier films’ plots, which is why it works as an entry point as easily as a finale.

It was Jackman’s ninth and, for a long time, presumed-final time in the role across seventeen years, and the film plays like it: an R rating used for weight rather than spectacle, a western’s pacing, and an ending that is allowed to actually land as an ending. Patrick Stewart’s Charles Xavier gets the same treatment, and the two performances are the reason the film is still cited as the high point of the character on screen.

Two notes worth having going in. First, Jackman did return as Wolverine once more, in 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine — made under Marvel Studios after Disney’s Fox acquisition, and not a continuation of Logan’s story or ending; our own Deadpool & Wolverine guide covers that one separately. Second, the film draws loosely on Old Man Logan and similar aged-Wolverine comics without adapting any of them directly, so comic familiarity helps the mood but explains nothing you need explained — the adamantium poisoning driving Logan’s decline is real comic-book physiology, and our breakdown of his powers and healing factor covers why it’s fatal here specifically. The production record has the full cast and release history.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I watch Logan?
Logan streams on Disney+ in the US with any subscription, checked October 23, 2026.
How long is Logan?
137 minutes.
Is Logan the last X-Men movie with Hugh Jackman?
It was his final screen performance as Wolverine in the original Fox X-Men continuity, before he returned for a cameo-turned-lead role in 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine, made under Marvel Studios.
Do I need to watch the other X-Men movies before Logan?
No. Logan is set years after the other films, deliberately detached from their plot details, and was built to work for viewers who have seen none of them.
Is Logan based on a specific comic?
Loosely. It draws on Old Man Logan and other stories about an aged Wolverine, but tells its own, mostly original story rather than adapting one directly.
