A faithful adaptation that trusts the book’s biggest swing
The thing Project Hail Mary had to get right was the relationship between Ryland Grace and Rocky, and it does. Andy Weir’s novel spends its back half as a two-hander between a panicking substitute science teacher and an alien engineer who communicates in musical tones, and the film gives that relationship the space it needs rather than rushing to the effects. Ryan Gosling plays Grace’s amnesia-then-memory structure — flashbacks to how he ended up on the mission interleaved with the present-day crisis — without leaning on voiceover to do the explaining for him.

You do not need to have read the book first; the film front-loads the premise (a mysterious substance is dimming the sun, and Grace is humanity’s last-resort scientist) cleanly enough in its first twenty minutes. Reading it first mostly changes how the Eva Stratt scenes land — Sandra Hüller plays the mission’s architect as someone making triage decisions the book is more willing to sit with than the film has time for, which is the one place the adaptation visibly compresses. The production record has the full shoot and release history.

A sequel is not actively in the works: Weir has said directly he does not yet have an idea for one he’s happy with, and his next book is an unrelated standalone. He’s left the door open if that changes. In the meantime, Gosling’s next genre role is already dated — our report on his casting as Marvel’s Ghost Rider covers what’s confirmed, and his villain is reportedly close to locked per our Ghost Rider casting update. For everything else landing in theaters and on streaming this year, our 2026 release calendar tracks it.
