The film the superhero movie got measured against

The Dark Knight is still the answer when someone asks what a superhero movie can be instead of a franchise entry. Christopher Nolan built it as a crime film first — closer in shape to Michael Mann’s Heat than to a comic book adaptation — and Heath Ledger’s Joker, played with no origin story and no explanation offered, is the reason it still gets cited as the high-water mark fifteen-plus years later. Ledger died six months before release and won a posthumous Academy Award for the role, the first acting Oscar ever given for a superhero film.

You do not strictly need Batman Begins first — the sequel recaps Bruce Wayne’s situation efficiently in its opening stretch — but it pays off more if you have seen it: Lucius Fox’s role, Rachel Dawes’ relationship with both Bruce and Harvey Dent, and the Narrows all carry weight from the first film. Harvey Dent’s turn into Two-Face is the plot the whole film is quietly building toward, and Aaron Eckhart plays him as a genuine idealist before the fall, which is what makes the fall land.

One continuity note worth being clear about: this is Christopher Nolan’s trilogy, with Christian Bale as Batman, and it has nothing to do with Matt Reeves’ 2022 The Batman, a separate, unconnected take with Robert Pattinson — our Batman (2022) guide covers that one on its own terms. And if Ledger’s Joker is what brought you here, our Joker (2019) guide covers Joaquin Phoenix’s Academy Award-winning, entirely separate take on the character. The film’s full production record is on Wikipedia. Everything else we track by release date is in our watch guides.
