The cut that only exists because fans would not let it go

This is not a director’s cut in the usual sense — it is a different film from the one Warner Bros. released in 2017. Zack Snyder left the production during post-production in 2017 for a family tragedy, and Joss Whedon was brought in to finish it, running extensive reshoots and cutting the runtime to two hours. A multi-year fan campaign under the hashtag “Release the Snyder Cut” followed, and in 2020 Warner Bros. funded additional post-production so Snyder could complete his original vision. The result premiered on HBO Max in March 2021 at 242 minutes, more than double the theatrical length, shot and framed throughout at a 4:3 aspect ratio.

The differences are not cosmetic. Darkseid appears as a fully realized villain instead of being referenced secondhand, Martian Manhunter is written into the story, Cyborg gets the character arc that was mostly cut from the theatrical version, and the tone throughout is darker and more deliberately paced than the 2017 edit’s compressed, lighter tone. It is also the third film in Snyder’s story, following Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and it assumes you already know what both of those films set up rather than re-explaining it.

Worth being clear about where this sits relative to the rest of DC on HBO Max: this continuity, sometimes called the Snyderverse, is separate from the fully rebooted DC Universe that began with James Gunn’s 2025 Superman — our Superman (2025) guide covers that new, unconnected continuity. For the film that starts this one, our Man of Steel guide has the 2013 opener, and if you want another HBO Max DC film from the same stretch of years, our The Suicide Squad guide covers James Gunn’s 2021 film. The production record on Wikipedia has the full history of both cuts. Everything else we track by release date is in our watch guides.

Zack Snyder's Justice League trivia 2

  • Production

Previous variations of the scene included characters such as Kilowog with John Stewart, Kilowog with Tomar-Re, and Stewart with Martian Manhunter. Source

  • Production

Ultimately, Snyder chose the third idea and filmed the scene in August 2020. Warner Bros. did not want Stewart to be in the scene, so Snyder decided to compromise with the studio and reshot the scene to only include Martian Manhunter by October 2020. Source

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I watch Zack Snyder’s Justice League?

Zack Snyder’s Justice League streams on HBO Max in the US (subscription), checked October 9, 2026.

When did Zack Snyder’s Justice League come out?

It premiered on HBO Max on March 18, 2021.

How long is Zack Snyder’s Justice League?

242 minutes, split into four parts plus an epilogue.

Is Zack Snyder’s Justice League different from the 2017 Justice League?

Substantially. It restores Zack Snyder’s original cut rather than the 2017 theatrical version reshot and re-edited after Snyder left the production, runs more than twice as long (242 minutes versus 120), uses a 4:3 frame throughout, and adds Darkseid, Martian Manhunter and other material absent from the theatrical release.

Do I need to watch Man of Steel and Batman v Superman first?

The film assumes you have. It is the third installment in Zack Snyder’s story, following Man of Steel (2013) and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), and picks up plot threads from both without reintroducing them.

Why was it released on HBO Max instead of theaters?

Warner Bros. shelved Snyder’s original cut in 2017 and released a reshot theatrical version instead. A multi-year fan campaign (“Release the Snyder Cut”) followed, and Warner Bros. funded additional post-production so Snyder could finish his version, released exclusively on HBO Max rather than in US theaters.
