Who’s Playing Who

Josh Hutcherson, best known as Peeta Mellark in the Hunger Games films and more recently as a lead in Five Nights at Freddy’s, takes on Scott Free — the New Genesis-born escape artist raised on Apokolips who performs under the stage name Mister Miracle. Mackenzie Davis, who starred in Station Eleven and Halt and Catch Fire, voices Big Barda, Scott’s wife and a former elite Female Fury turned the couple’s equal in a fight. Nathan Fillion is also attached, reprising his DCU role as Guy Gardner.

The Series Adapts Tom King and Mitch Gerads’ Eisner-Winning Run

The show is based on the Mister Miracle maxiseries by writer Tom King and artist Mitch Gerads, a 12-issue run published over 23 months, from October 2017 to September 2019, that won King and Gerads back-to-back Eisner Awards for writing and art. The comic follows Scott Free’s attempt to build a normal life with Barda while still fighting in the generations-long war between New Genesis and Apokolips, filtered through King’s own experience as a former CIA counterterrorism officer.

King is adapting it himself: Peter Safran said King “wrote all eight episodes” of the series solo, calling the scripts “dynamite.” The series will stream on HBO Max and is animated by Titmouse, the studio also behind Peacemaker’s animated spinoffs.

Where It Fits in James Gunn’s DCU

James Gunn has confirmed Mister Miracle is canon to the DC Universe he’s building across film and television, making it the fourth live-action-adjacent DCU series after Peacemaker, Lanterns and Creature Commandos. No premiere date beyond “2027” has been set.
