Not a sequel to Welcome to Raccoon City — a separate reboot
This is the second time Sony has rebooted Resident Evil from scratch this decade, and the two reboots share nothing. 2021’s Welcome to Raccoon City restaged the first two games with a different cast and director; this film, directed by Zach Cregger off Barbarian and Weapons, is an original story following Bryan, a medical courier, through one outbreak night, with no returning characters and no numbering connecting it to anything before it. If you are trying to figure out which Resident Evil movie you half-remember hearing about, this is the new one: it opened September 18, 2026.

Austin Abrams leads as Bryan, with Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, Paul Walter Hauser, Will Merrick, Griffin Newman and Jo Martin. The production credits are the other tell that this is a different kind of reboot: Columbia Pictures and Constantin Film (the original film rights holder) produced it together with Sony’s own PlayStation Productions, the banner behind The Last of Us and Gran Turismo, which suggests this version is pitched closer to the games than the Milla Jovovich-era films ever were.

Nowhere streams it yet. Sony’s own film site and the production record are where a streaming date would show up first, and our own release-date report tracks the same question; we will update both the day a date is set. For a PlayStation Productions title that already has a home, our The Last of Us guide is on the site now.
