DC Studios’ first real horror movie, not a Batman movie with a monster in it

Clayface is not a Batman film. Bruce Wayne does not appear in the trailers, and the story stays with Matt Hagen: a struggling actor whose face is destroyed by a crime boss and who turns to a black-market cosmetic treatment that goes exactly as badly as that premise promises. James Watkins, who made Speak No Evil, directs a script co-written by Mike Flanagan — the closest thing horror has to a house style right now, from Doctor Sleep to The Haunting of Hill House — and the film is rated R, the hardest rating any DC Studios theatrical release has carried: Superman (2025) and Supergirl both stayed at PG-13.

Tom Rhys Harries plays Hagen, with Naomi Ackie as the doctor whose treatment causes the transformation and Max Minghella rounding out the leads. It sits inside James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe alongside Supergirl and Creature Commandos, but tells a self-contained story — there is no prerequisite viewing, the way there would be for a direct sequel.

It opens October 23, 2026, in theaters only; no streaming or digital date has been set. The official film site and the production record are where that would be announced first. If body horror grounded in a comics villain is the draw, our Batman (2022) guide is the closest thing already on the site; everything else by release date is in our watch guides.
