A horror movie that won four Oscars by refusing to be small

Sinners is the rare original horror film that became an awards-season winner on its own terms, not despite being a vampire movie but because of what it does with one. Ryan Coogler wrote and directed it with no studio IP to lean on — no comic, no prior film, no franchise — and used the vampire myth as a way into 1930s Mississippi Delta blues culture: Jim Crow, land ownership, and the idea that a song powerful enough can tear a hole in time. It left the 98th Academy Awards with four wins from a record-setting 16 nominations: Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan, Best Original Screenplay for Coogler, and Best Original Score and Best Cinematography, the latter making Autumn Durald Arkapaw the first woman to win that category. The film’s full accolades record has the complete list. Jordan’s win is for a dual role, playing both Smoke and Stack, twin brothers and WWI veterans who come home to open a juke joint — a performance that carries the first half before the film turns into something closer to a siege movie.

The film’s real discovery is Miles Caton, a musician making his acting debut as Sammie Moore, the preacher’s son whose guitar and voice are good enough to literally summon trouble. Caton is a working musician first, and it shows in the juke-joint centerpiece, a single unbroken sequence that moves through generations of Black music — blues, to a drum circle, to funk, to a DJ — as if Sammie’s playing has briefly collapsed time. That sequence alone is the reason the film built the word of mouth it did before most people knew it was also a vampire story.

Once Jack O’Connell’s Remmick arrives, the film becomes something more conventional on the surface — a one-night siege against vampires who want in — but Coogler keeps the folklore and the history doing the work: Hoodoo practice, Irish and Choctaw characters with their own reasons to be outsiders, and a vampire myth that runs on consent and communal memory rather than jump scares. It is not a sequel-ready monster movie; it is built to be watched once, completely, the way Coogler’s other original work (Fruitvale Station, the first Black Panther) is. If you want another recent horror original that treats dread as a slow burn rather than a jump-scare reel, our Carrie guide covers Mike Flanagan’s take on the Stephen King classic. Everything else we track by release date is in our watch guides.
