The origin story that assumes you are sick of origin stories

Into the Spider-Verse opens by telling you a Spider-Man origin you have already seen, at speed, as a joke – and then tells you five more. That is not a gag at the audience’s expense; it is the film’s argument. By 2018 three different actors had played Peter Parker on screen inside sixteen years, and the beat-for-beat origin had been filmed twice in that stretch, so the only interesting move left was to treat it as a form everybody in the room already knows and see what you could build on top of it. What gets built is Miles Morales, and the reason the film works for people who have never read a comic is that it never once asks you to have read one. Our explainer on who Miles Morales is covers the comics history if you want it, but the film does not need you to.

The craft is the other half of the case, and it is the half that changed the industry. Sony Pictures Animation built a look that borrows directly from print – visible halftone dots, misregistered color, hand-lettered sound effects, captions in panel boxes – and, more unusually, varied how often the animation updates from character to character so that Miles physically moves differently from the experienced Spider-People around him until he stops being a beginner. Almost every animated feature that has tried a stylized look since 2018 is arguing with this film, and Daniel Pemberton’s score and the soundtrack do work no orchestral superhero score of that decade attempted.

Where it stands in 2026: both released films are on Netflix in the US, which is unusual for a franchise split across a studio and a streamer, so the pair can be watched back to back on one subscription – our Across the Spider-Verse guide covers the sequel. The catch is that Across the Spider-Verse ends mid-story and Beyond the Spider-Verse is dated June 18, 2027, per its release listing, so watching both back to back leaves you on a cliffhanger with more than a year to wait. Starting with the first film alone is a complete story and a defensible choice. The live-action spin-off from this corner of the shelf is covered in our Spider-Noir guide, and our ranking of the best Spider-Man villains has the wider rogues’ gallery.
