Avengers: Endgame Guide: Runtime, Cast and Where to Stream

The prerequisite is not plot, it is attachment

Every “MCU watch order” answer to this film gives you a list of twenty-one films, and almost all of that list is wrong. Endgame is not a plot-dense film. Its plot is simple enough to summarize in two sentences, and the one entry you genuinely cannot skip is Avengers: Infinity War, because Endgame opens on its final frame. What the film actually needs from you is not information; it is attachment. Roughly half its running time is people in rooms, and the scenes land in proportion to how long you have known the person in the room. That is a completely different requirement from a continuity checklist, and it changes which films are worth your time first.

If you are building a short list rather than a complete one: Iron Man and Captain America: The First Avenger, because the film’s two longest emotional debts are to those two characters’ beginnings; Captain America: The Winter Soldier, because it establishes the relationship the third act turns on; Thor: Ragnarok, because Thor’s state in Endgame is otherwise unreadable as anything but a joke; and Guardians of the Galaxy, because Nebula has more to do here than in any film she leads. Five films and Infinity War, and you have the version of Endgame the Russo brothers built. Add Ant-Man if you want the mechanism to make sense, though the film explains itself. Two practical notes. The runtime is 181 minutes – the film’s release record has it, along with the April 26, 2019 US date – while Disney+ gives the duration as 3 hours 5 minutes, which is that print with its end credits attached rather than a different cut. And there is no post-credits scene, which is worth knowing because the studio had trained a decade of audiences to sit through the credits; what plays over the end of them is a sound cue rather than a scene.
