Three seasons, three different shows – and a showrunner change in the middle
Dead City did not grow season to season so much as get rebuilt twice. Season 1 is six episodes, tight and almost a limited series: Maggie needs something from Negan, Manhattan is the only place to get it, and the whole run is that errand. Season 2 stretched to eight and let the island itself take over, with rival factions and a city that has its own rules. Season 3 is eight again but the credits changed – Seth Hoffman, a writer and co-executive producer on The Walking Dead’s fourth, fifth and sixth seasons, took over as showrunner from creator Eli Jorné when AMC renewed the show in July 2025.
That handoff is the single most useful thing to know before you start. The episode list above looks like one continuous run, but the pacing is not: six episodes, then eight, then eight under different hands. At 40 to 50 minutes each, 22 episodes is about sixteen hours, and the two natural stopping points are the season 1 finale and the season 2 finale rather than anywhere in the middle. It is also the Walking Dead spin-off that asks least of you. Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan carry two characters with more shared history than anyone else in the franchise, and the show keeps re-explaining that history because it is the engine of every argument they have. You do not need eleven seasons of The Walking Dead to follow it – you need the first ten minutes.
