Part 7 needs none of the first six

Steel Ball Run is its own story. It swaps the Joestar family’s usual continuity for an alternate 1890s America, a new protagonist in the paralyzed ex-jockey Johnny Joestar, and a transcontinental horse race with a $50 million prize as its engine. Hirohiko Araki built Part 7 to work as a soft reboot, and the anime plays it the same way: nothing from Phantom Blood through Stone Ocean is required reading. The name “JoJo” survives; almost everything else resets.

What carries over is the shape of the storytelling: a central duo (Johnny and the Spin-fighting Gyro Zeppeli), a rotating cast of rivals met on the road, and supernatural abilities that read as puzzles as much as powers. The race format gives the first stretch of episodes a clean rhythm — a new obstacle, a new competitor, a new rule about how Gyro’s Spin technique actually works — before the season’s back half starts pulling on a bigger, stranger thread about what the race is really for.

David Production, the studio behind every JoJo anime since Stardust Crusaders, is handling the adaptation, and it is releasing in the same pattern as the last two seasons: a head-start special, then a long weekly run. That means this is one of the only JoJo parts you can currently watch close to real time rather than bingeing complete. For how Part 7 sits against the rest of the manga’s eight parts, our JoJo watch order guide has the full map, our episode-by-episode schedule tracks each Friday’s drop time, Wikipedia’s episode record is where a new confirmed air date would show up first, and Netflix’s own Tudum page for the season has cast notes and behind-the-scenes pieces straight from the studio.
