How season 1 was released, and why the first week matters
HBO Max dropped the first three episodes together on January 13, 2022, then moved to one a week on Thursdays through the February 17 finale. If you are starting now, that opening block is effectively a 2-hour pilot, and it is the stretch that sets up the team dynamic the rest of the season runs on.
James Gunn wrote all eight episodes and directed five of them, which is why the season holds one voice from the pilot to the finale.
